It looks like gas prices will cut down on my National Park travels this spring and summer. Oh well...

Fort Funston in San Francisco

I was in Daly City today, and I took advantage of the great weather to go to Fort Funston in San Francisco. It's a place where people go hang-gliding. The wind wasn't suitable for that when I got there, but I had a chance to take pictures of people flying their RC planes, as well as hang gliders parked on the ground.

The Sopranos

Since I don't have HBO, I haven't seen any episodes of The Sopranos's last season. But last night at my parents' place I was able to catch a short segment, and it was a funny one. The backdrop is Tony Soprano in the hospital recovering from a gunshot. Fundie is an Evangelical trying to save Tony. Christopher is Tony's nephew, and Hesh and Beth are Jewish friends of Tony:

(Tony was looking at a dinosaur book)

Fundie: Dinosaurs? My kids can't get enough.

Tony: Yeah. Yeah, me too. Ever since I saw King Kong kicked their ass in the original. My son loves dinosaurs too.

Fundie: Interesting.

Tony: What?

Fundie: Some people would have you believe dinosaurs existed millions of years ago. It's just not true. God created the Earth six thousands years ago. When I tell my kids, you have to remember. Dinosaurs and human beings lived on the Earth at the same time.

Tony: What, like the Flintstones?

Fundie: It's in the Bible.

Tony: What, what about that carbon dating stuff? A lot of scientists would disagree with you.

Fundie: I think you'll find those people all have an agenda, Tony. Evolution, which is Satan's plan to deny God. Evolution... and salvation are mutually exclusive.

Tony: The guy next door is a scientist. I think he would disagree with you big time.

Fundie: Then, that man's not saved. Read about Mr. Colson. We'll talk later.
(Fundie walks out the room)

Christopher:
What's he saying? There were dinosaurs back with Adam and Eve?

Tony: I guess.

Christopher: No way. T-Rex in the Garden of Eden? Adam and Eve would be running all the time scared shitless. But, the Bible says it was paradise.

Beth: You can disagree with Evangelicals, but they're great friends of the Jews. Because, Israel is the holy land.

Hesh: You wait. (sarcasm)

Serenity / Firefly

I borrowed the movie Serenity from the library about a week ago. I really liked it and was glad the library also has the Firefly series it was based on. The series aired on USA and lasted one season. Actually it didn't even last one season since there were un-aired episodes on the DVD set. I finally finished watching them today.

The show was created by Joss Whedon of the Buffy and Angel fame. The series was really good, and I'm surprised I don't even remember seeing a trailer for any episodes. I assume USA didn't market it enough and gave up too easily on it.

The series follow a group of people lead by a character based on Han Solo, a western cowboy with a space ship he leases out for cargo transport. And just like Buffy and Angel, Joss Whedon created a cast with different personalities. The show's really funny and the cast worked well together. I guess Joss Whedon has a talent for looking at people who can blend well together. He did the same thing with Buffy and Angel.

Unfortunately, the movie barely grossed enough worldwide to cover cost, the DVD sales should put it in the black. Chances of another Serenity/Firefly movie is slim.
